The Fall 1999 hat collection of London-based accessories' designer Philip Treacy made quite an impression on the sophisticated audience at its recent showing in New York City. The exciting show was sponsored by Swarovski, the world-famous producer of cut crystal stones. The Austrian-based company, with a tradition of collaboration with couture, put its full range of brilliant crystal products at Mr. Treacy's disposal, and the designer has woven many of these stones into his latest heady creations of hats and accessories.
The ready-to-wear hat range was created using Treacy's own printed velours, similar to personalized stamped leather. The long hair velours incorporate designs of birds, spots and zebra, printed in red/camel, black/camel, and brown/black. The colors the designer offers are rich and luxurious, olive green, olive brown, navy, bordeaux, purple, grey and black. Some hats are adorned with Treacy's signature unicorn logo in silver, others are trimmed with leather binding and feathers.
Treacy's new rain-wear range of hat designs made its debut at the London and New York shows this season. It offers women a practical and stylish hat which can be worn to complement a casual or more dressy look. There are six different styles available, including a modern cloche, a top-stitched down-turned brim hat and a softer version of Treacy's trilby. These designs are available in Teflon and Barber in shades of black, Barber green, navy and grey. They have been designed to protect the face and hair from the elements, uniquely styled to allow water to run off the hat and away from the body.
A native of Ireland, Philip Treacy has achieved a reputation as a luxury hat and handbag creator using "traditional craftsmanship and the finest materials." He has worked with such top designers as John Galliano, Rifat Ozbek, Victor Edelstein and Karl Lagerfeld, and is a past winner of the British Accessory Designer of the Year award. In addition to hats, Philip Treacy also designs evening bags, scarves, and day handbags. His hand-crafted creations juxtapose contemporary shapes with exquisite and elaborate fabrications.
